The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) has confirmed the board is discussing a proposed change of ownership of the Australian GT Championship.
CAMS has told Speedcafe.com that the organisation is ‘comfortable’ with the current proposal under review, which could be completed before the end of the month.
Trofeo Motorsport boss Jim Manolios is understood to have agreed a deal with current owner Tony Quinn to take over the category management.
Manolios, whose Trofeo company is the official importer of the championship’s control Pirelli tyres for Australia, refused to comment when questioned by this website on the matter.
A change of ownership requires the approval of CAMS who are the sanctioning body for the championship and its junior Australian GT Trophy Series.
“I can say with confidence that the board are comfortable with the discussion to date and we are just finalising that process and which should happen within the next week,” CAMS chief executive Eugene Arocca told Speedcafe.com.
If the deal is approved it will see Quinn hand over the reins to the championship which he purchased from Martin and Rachael Wagg in 2011.
Supercars attempted to take over Australian GT last year only for its bid to collapse at the final hurdle after failing to receive the green light from CAMS.
It is understood Supercars has not been involved in the current ownership negotiations, although it would be open to the championship having a regular slot on its support bill moving forward.
